Korea is situated on the Korean Peninsula, which lies on the northeastern region of the Asian continent. Throughout its long history, Korea has consistently managed to preserve its traditional and distinctive values and culture while skillfully and quickly managing to adapt to constantly changing social and political circumstances. Most not ably, the Koreans have achieved a modern democracy and economic prosperity from the ashes of the Korean War (1950-1953) and the heartrending pain caused by the ensuing national division.
With numerous beautiful mountains and rivers, Korea has a plethora of flora and fauna, with many endemic species found nowhere else in the world. The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), in particular, where human access has been restricted for more than 40 years is now a unique and globally important sanctuary for avifauna, mammals, and other species.
Over the course of thousands of years, Korea has developed an amazing diversity of cultural and artistic expressions that include: historical edifices such as Bulguksa Temple and the Hwaseong Fortress and fine arts such as the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) celadon. In modern times, the innovative designs of mobile phones, the recent Hallyu (Korean Wave) and the video art of Nam June Paik exemplify the uniqueness of the Korean aesthetic.
Koreans have inherited a legacy of rare scientific achievements such as Hangeul (Korean alphabet), Tripitaka Koreana, and the Geobukseon (Turtle ship), the last of which has inspired and stimulated the current Korean shipbuilding industry. Today, Korea is driving global digital culture as an IT powerhouse with cutting-edge technologies.
